WORKPLACE MUST-HAVES
by Megan Hodgkiss, Doctoral Student, GSU Communication Dept.

Women in the Profession Members share their "must-have” items for the workplace Members of the Women in the Profession Section may have diverse business backgrounds and practice in a variety of legal areas; however, we all carry tools for professional success. WIP recently asked its members, "What essential item do you carry with you during the work day?”

Alexa Kwartin
Kwartin Family Law
I always carry my iphone with me. I would be totally lost without it! I use it for emails, to do lists, note taking, my calendar, and I even have an app so that I can call out from my work phone number. It is a fantastic and necessary tool!

Laura C. Zschach
Bodker, Ramsey, Andrews, Winograd & Wildstein, P.C.
My essential item is my phone because it has a ton of pictures of my kids on it so that when I am having "one of those days” or "one of those moments,” I can look at their smiling faces and it makes everything better!

Rebecca C.E. McFadyen
Ballard Spahr LLP
I have to have a little notebook so that I can jot down random great ideas or things to do. Otherwise, I might lose those great ideas and forget those things to do!

Suzanne Barner
Student, GSU Law and Business Schools
I always carry business cards with me. I never know who I will run into so I always make sure that I have them.

Rachel Platt
The Platt Law Firm
I cannot live without my iphone. I held out for a long time claiming my blackberry was better than the iphone, but now I don’t know how I ever did business without it. I use it for everything related to my business when I am on the go, but I also love looking at pictures of my little boy when I am stressed or overwhelmed—it helps keep me focused.

Taylor Tribble
Huff, Powell & Bailey, LLC
I always carry my Macbook Air. I constantly am in and out of the office, at depositions, hearings and meetings and with a wifi network I can access all my files remotely on my computer. The MacBook Air weighs less than three pounds and is a much better alternative to lugging around heavy notebooks and binders.

Robyn C. Benkendorf
King & Spalding, LLP
I must have different colored pens with me at all times. I often take notes on the same document in several different meetings, so having different colors on the page helps me keep track of when I made a particular note.

Jacquelyn Saylor
The Saylor Law Firm LLP
Things I can't live without when leaving the house during the week: purse, iPhone, small pad for thoughts or notes when on the phone, some bar projects (like minutes) I need to work on if there's a break while out of the office. I usually take my swim bag or workout clothes and increasingly my mini IPad and new keyboard.

Valentia P. Alleyne
The Alleyne Law Firm
Call me old school, but I never leave without my pocket-sized planner. I like to jot down important things I'm either likely to forget or am not fast enough to type in my iPhone. And, if electronic devices aren't allowed in certain places I have a nifty item I can always carry in my purse.

Jackson Dodsworth
Esquire Deposition Solutions
Okay, I’m ready to head out the door. I have my laptop, Blackberry and car keys … but what I really must have is my hand lotion. The brand or fragrance isn’t important. Massaging the lotion into my hands during the day not only soothes my hands but also calms my mind, even if for only a few minutes.

I always keep a pair of cute flats stashed in my bag. It seems I am constantly running between my home office, school, and meetings at different law firms.

Max Ruthenberg-Marshall
Hanrahan Freitag Family Law, LLC
I always carry a protein bar in my brief case. Not everyone believes in breaking for lunch, and I prefer not to pass out in court.
