Award Description
The Public Interest Law Section of the Atlanta Bar Association presents the Rita A. Sheffey Public Interest Award annually to an attorney practicing in the public interest at the Atlanta Bar Association's Celebrating Service Luncheon. This award is intended to honor the everyday public interest practitioners who work zealously on behalf of their clients and give back to their fellow lawyers through participation and leadership in the bar.

History of the Rita A. Sheffey Award
The award is named in honor of Rita A. Sheffey, the creator of the Public Interest Law Section and former president of the boards of the Atlanta Bar Association, the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. Rita's commitment to and development of public interest programs and professionals through her leadership is unmatched. She has promoted access to justice for the marginalized and underserved in our community. Her career represents the highest example of service to our profession. The inaugural award was given to Rita herself in 2012.
